The Suck Less JOB SEARCH BLOG
If this was so easy, I wouldn't have written a book on it. Developing your C.O.P.S is important to (A) get an amplified job and (B), protect the rest of your career.
During my new client consults, I heard a lot of C.O.P.S ideas that alerted me to that fact that I needed to address this...
Here my comments, below:
This Friday, we are testing a new piece of tech that we believe will be huge for your search and easier for us to deliver the goods that you need to ROCKET into the job you deserve.
What we are looking for are a handful of brave souls that want Adam to look at your resume and LinkedIn.com profile, live!
More criteria: We want you to have read The Suck Less Job Search and attended 1-3 of our webinar series. Additionally, this is important, you have never spoken with us before. If this is you, we want your time.
As a thank you, Adam will be offering treats that he has NEVER offered before. If you are interested, ping me at email@example.com
I have seen people convert fast...but, nothing like this. It was a thrill ride this week, watching so many tough job searches turnaround on a dime and result in massive job offers. Wow! It may be the market...may be guts and hustle...may be luck. I don't know what happened this week but, I was glad I could be along for the ride.
C.O.P.S That crushed last week...
A marketing leader had a take on leveraging internal assets and turning the billing department into company/product evangelists (weird but it worked)
A data officer developed a hybrid role using a lot of the actions a CRO would use, coupled with ID of new channels he could uncover and penetrate
A CEO defined herself as the growth by acquisition player, focused on a unique way she ID'd targets and acquired these companies for pennies with a 10x return within 12 months.
It's been about 8 months, 3 restarts, a load of excitement, and LIVE MATERIAL...
I am finally done with my book draft. My next book will focus on that Op Sys stuff you hear me talk about over and over. The book will go into more detail in terms of what it is, why it's critical for job search success, how to create it, and what it does when it's right.
I will flesh out real client success stories from their Op Sys and the target companies, strategies, and offers they received. This is going to be the best book I've written and I am just so excited to share it with you.
We are now in the edit and art phase. Stay tuned...
I am about to take off for NYC and enjoy one of my favorite cities on the planet. New York always makes me feel a sense of possibility, makes me want to push harder. So, while I am in NYC for a little speaking gig and a potential business acquisition, I am thinking about what more I can do this year.
After 15 years of doing this, I am on the hunt for my grasshopper. I want someone else to run with me. I don't want to step down, I want to step up. So, this year, I will be hunting for another HR Leader to jump in and let me show them what I know. We will see what happens. It's time.
More fun stuff, my next book is wrapping up. It is focused on 2 things, your REAL professional brand and LIFT! We need to see formula and we need to see inspiration. I have both for you.
Finally, I trademarked something I am proud of and am noodling on how to deliver this product to you. Not sure how it's going to be delivered. But, I am excited about it.
Lastly, I have been whipping through a service called, Blinkist. It's a Cliff's Notes for popular books. While the summaries tend to be too simplistic, I am thinking and innovating. That's awesome.
It made people nuts when I told them not to start their job search in January. Most companies start opening their budgets and solidify their staffing matrices in February.
So, as we are entering the last week in January, it's time to Race!
You need 6 pieces:
Job Search Strategy

It's GO time!!!
Get one of these and your job search will close 60% faster. Hey, where did you get that statistic, Adam? We have been tracking tens of thousands of job seekers since we launched in 2004. Job Seekers that have this are remarkably more effective. As my G'ma used to say, "Give a listen".
My strategy was to spend 5-8 hours a day on job boards. Then, reach out to my network to see if they knew of anything. Finally, get as many headhunters to "work" for me as possible. I didn't really think this out but, that was indeed my strategy. All three components had one thing in common, FAILURE!
Getting ready for 2019, a job seeker’s checklist:
1) Target 10 influencers (VC’s, PE’s, Big Consulting, Big Business Law Firms, Big Accounting Firms, Business Brokers). They are the new headhunters.
2) Get an accountability partner (not a friend or family member) to keep you honest in your search and make sure you aren’t spinning on bad strategy.
3) Build a Validated candidate operating system. It can’t be more than 5 pieces and needs to be Validated.
4) Limit yourself to 5 hours per week on job boards and resume tweaks. That should free up plenty of time to execute a proper job search strategy and push you to do more than stare at a screen.
5) Find those connectors buried in your network. Use InMails to ask your professional contacts who they know that you need to meet.
6) Understand that most companies don’t hire January 2nd, there is a slow ramp up as companies sort their budgets, strategy, and staffing matrices. Use the next couple weeks to build a list of 50 target companies. A target company is a company that has a pain you can solve right now.
7) Finally, focus your brand messaging on first quarter wins.
What I have given you here is the beginning of an actual job search strategy. You need one to be successful in your search. Give it a shot and let me know how it works.
I am just a guy standing in front of a job seeker asking them to let me help them get hired.
